Local Moving in Seattle, Billed by the Hour
Most local moves in Seattle cover only a few miles, but those miles can include a steep hill, a drawbridge, and a block with nowhere to park. A studio on Capitol Hill heading to a duplex in Wallingford, a Ballard townhome moving to a house in Shoreline, or a West Seattle bungalow going to a condo in Beacon Hill all count as local moves. Our Seattle local movers charge by the hour for the crew and truck, so the bill follows the actual work and drive time.
Our crews start from our downtown office on 5th Ave, and every mover on the truck is a full-time, background-checked Puget Sound Moving employee. We don’t hand local jobs to subcontractors or day laborers.
Picking the Right Crew Size
A larger crew costs more per hour but finishes sooner, so on a bigger home it often works out cheaper overall. Most Seattle moves fall into one of these:
- 2 movers + truck: studios and 1-bedroom apartments
- 3 movers + truck: 2-bedroom apartments and small homes
- 4 movers + truck: 3-bedroom homes
- 4 movers + 2 trucks: 3- to 4-bedroom homes
- 5 movers + 2 trucks: 4- to 5-bedroom homes
- 6 movers + 2 trucks: 5+ bedrooms and large homes
Every crew comes with the truck and fuel, moving blankets and shrink wrap, furniture disassembly and reassembly, and floor and door frame protection. There are no stair fees, elevator fees, or fuel surcharges. Unsure what you need? Show us your place on a free video estimate and we’ll suggest a crew.
Ways to Shorten an Hourly Move in Seattle
Reserve the curb
On blocks with limited parking, a City of Seattle Temporary No Parking Zone holds space for the truck. The no-parking easels should go up about 72 hours before your move.
Lock in the elevator
Downtown and South Lake Union buildings often require an elevator reservation and a certificate of insurance. Book your time slot first and we’ll handle the paperwork.
Plan around the bridges
Crossing the Ship Canal or the West Seattle Bridge at rush hour can eat up an hour on I-5 or SR 99. An early or midday start usually keeps the drive short.
Finish packing the night before
Sealed, labeled boxes load quickly. If packing is running behind, our Seattle packing services crew can come the day before.
Moves Across the City and Next Door
We move people between every part of Seattle, from Queen Anne and Magnolia to the University District, Green Lake, and Columbia City, and out to neighbors like Edmonds, Burien, Renton, Mercer Island, and Kirkland. Moving 7 days a week, we can often fit in a short-notice date when a lease or closing shifts.
Local Moving Questions
What counts as a local move?
Moves within Seattle and around the greater Puget Sound area are usually billed by the hour. Longer trips are priced as long distance moves. We’ll tell you which applies when you call.
Do stairs cost extra?
No. Stairs and long carries, common in Seattle walk-ups and hillside homes, only affect how long the move takes. There’s no separate fee.
Can you move just a few large items?
Yes. Many customers move their own boxes and hire us for the furniture, which keeps the hours down.
How soon can I book?
Two to four weeks’ notice gives you the most choice, but short-notice local moves are often possible. Call our Seattle office at (206) 558-2910 to check dates.
What Customers Say
Real Google reviews of Puget Sound Moving local movers, labeled with the office that did the move.
Referred by family “I hired Puget Sound moving after my parents referred me to them… The crew arrived promptly, had all the equipment needed, and clearly communicated with me on timeline expectations. The crew took extra care to properly wrap all of my belongings so that they would not get damaged. I was especially concerned about a arc lamp I had, But it’s arrived perfectly.”
Packed & moved “I will never move my own stuff again. Even just having them move the bed by itself made it all worth it. They wrapped and packed everything up and moved everything we asked promptly and professionally.”
House protected “The folks did a very personalized and a perfect job, very cautious not to damage house or paint at the source and destination.”
